How do I send a direct message to students on eClass?

The Messaging feature allows you to communicate with other eClass users. When the user you are messaging is offline, depending on the user's settings, your message is sent as an e-mail notification or highlighted on the messaging icon the next time the user is online.

If you enable message notifications to be sent to your e-mail account (regardless of your online status), you can either reply directly from your email (which moves the message outside of eClass) or by logging into eClass to reply (which keeps the message inside eClass). 

Sending a Message

You can send messages to eClass users who are part of the Participants list in your course(s) or to those who are part of your Contacts list

Follow the steps below to send a message to users from your Participants list:

  1. Go to Participants page in the red, course navigation bar.
  2. Enable the tick boxes to the left of the user(s) you want message or use the "Select all" tick box at top of the list.
  3. Choose "Send a message" from the "With selected users..." drop-down menu at the bottom of the page below the participants list.Participants page highlighting the steps to send a message
  4. Compose your message and click the "Send" button when you are satisfied with the message.

Viewing Messages

When you log into eClass, a number will appear over the messaging icon indicating the number of new messages you have received from other users.


To view messages, follow the instructions below:

  1. Click the messaging icon to view the new message. The messaging drawer will appear.

Managing Your Contacts List

Adding users to your contacts list makes it easier to find the user for future messaging. Some users may also only accept messages from their contacts, and you will need to add them to your contacts and have them confirm you as a contact before you can send messages.. 

Follow the steps below to add users to your contact list

Only eClass users who are part of your Participants list in one or more of your courses can be added to your Contact list

  1. Click the Messaging icon at the top right side of your eClass page.The messaging icon is to the left of your personal menu
  2. Click Contacts

  3. Click on the magnifying glass icon.

  4. Start typing the name of the individual you would like to add to your contacts list. Select the user from the list.

  5. Open the action menu from the ellipsis icon, then click Add to contactsAdd to contacts
  6. A permission request will be sent to the user to add them to your contacts list.

  7. Once the recipient confirms the permission, they will be added to your contacts list.
