How to Manually Hide Grades, and Release Grades at a Scheduled Time

eClass allows you to delay the release of students' grades manually or at a scheduled time. This can be useful if you are grading assignments over a series of days and want all students to see their grades only after all grading has been completed.

Manually Hide Grades for an Entire Assignment or Activity

  1. On your main course page, click Grades from the top banner. Gradebook button in the top red navigation bar
  2. From the drop-down menu, select Gradebook setup from the default Grader Report. The gradebook will open to the Gradebook setup.

  3. In the row for the Assignment you wish to hide, under the Actions column, select the ellipsis, a drop-down menu will appear
  4. From the drop-down menu, select Hide. A hidden icon will appear under the Status column.
    The ellipsis option is to the far right and allows options to edit grade item, hide, or lock the activity
  5. When you are ready to show the grades for this grade item to students, navigate back to the Gradebook setup page and locate the grade item you want to show. Under the Actions column, select the ellipsis, and from the drop-down menu, select Show. The hidden icon will disappear to indicate the item is now visible.

Additional Considerations for Hiding Grades

Keep in mind that when you hide an eClass Assignment column in the gradebook, the grade is hidden throughout your course page (even when the student looks at their assignment submission). Although the grades, as well as any feedback comments or files you have added will be hidden, the assignment activity link will still be visible.

Release Grades at a Scheduled Time

Another option is to set grades for a particular assignment to automatically become visible to students at a scheduled time. To do this:

  1. On your main course page, click Grades from the course navigation bar. Gradebook button in the top red navigation bar
  2. From the drop-down menu, select Grader reportGrader report option highlighted in drop-down menu
  3. Turn Edit mode on using the top right switch.
  4. Find the column that you wish to have the grades released at a later time, and click on the ellipsis, the select Edit grade item from the drop-down menu.
    Select the ellipsis to the right of the activity title and select the first option "Edit grade item" from the drop-down menu
  5. Delete

    Note - it is possible to do this for individual students by clicking on ellipsis for the activity within the user's row and following the same steps.

  6. Within the pop-up window for editing the grade item, select Show more... at the bottom to open the Edit grade item page.
  7. Enable Hidden until: The date/time fields will become editable.Check the box beside "Hidden until" to enable and modify the scheduled date
  8. Make your changes and click the red Save changes button at the bottom of the page to finish. You will be returned to the Grader report page.
