How to use the HTML editor

What is the HTML Editor in eClass?

The HTML editors in our eClass system we're going to cover here are the Atto editor and the TinyMCE editor. The editors are available in forums, assignments, pages, labels, descriptions, quiz questions, and more.

Editing in HTML allows instructors and students to create formatted content using a visual editor, but also includes a raw HTML view for advanced customization.

To get to it, open any activity that has a place where you can enter text (in this example, it is an activity description).

This is the Atto editor - If you do not immediately see the </> icon, expand the menu with the drop down arrow key on the side:

For the TinyMCE editor, HTML can be accessed by navigating to the Tools menu and then selecting Source code:

What Is the HTML View For?

By clicking the </> (HTML) button, you can toggle to the raw HTML source of the content. This is useful if you want to:

  • Embed third-party content (e.g., Padlet, Google Forms, interactive charts)
  • Customize layout beyond what the editor allows (I.E change font colors that are beyond what is offered in the editor's text selection)
  • Insert your own inline styles or scripts (if permissions allow)
  • Fix formatting issues that appear in the WYSIWYG view (such as heading 2 (<h2>))

Or any other advanced coding needs.
